Late 20th centuryContinued conservation of wall paintings, screens and medieval furnishings.
1955Church formally listed at Grade I.
20th centuryChurch recognised nationally as one of England's most important unrestored medieval churches.
1888–1889J. T. Micklethwaite oversees conservation works with support from William Morris.
1889Restoration completed with emphasis on preserving rather than altering the historic fabric.
1888Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings begins restoration campaign.
18th centuryChurchyard gains many of its surviving carved headstones and chest tombs.
17th centurySouth-east aisle window inserted.
17th centuryMedieval box pews altered and cut down to suit post-Reformation worship.
17th centuryCommunion table and rails introduced.
c.1630Pulpit and tester installed.
16th centuryDeep south porch added or substantially rebuilt.
1530s–1540sReformation alters worship and removes many medieval devotional practices.
14th–15th centuryNumerous parclose screens installed throughout the church.
15th centuryMedieval font introduced.
15th centuryNorth doorway remodelled with rounded trefoil head.
14th centuryWall paintings created, including decoration around the chancel arch.
c.1300Knight's memorial slab of Tournai marble placed in the chancel.
Mid 13th centuryDouble bellcote constructed with trefoiled openings.
13th centuryTriple east window, chancel furnishings and architectural detailing added.
Early 13th centuryNave arcades and chancel rebuilt or extended during the refoundation campaign.
1205Church refounded and substantially enlarged, creating much of the present medieval building.
Late Middle AgesQueen-post nave roof with wind braces constructed.
c.1050–1100South doorway created, one of the oldest surviving features of the church.
1066Norman Conquest brings major changes to church administration and patronage.
Late Saxon periodEarliest church established at Inglesham; parts of the present building may date from this period.
Present daySt John the Baptist remains one of the finest surviving examples of a largely untouched medieval parish church in England.
