Architecturally, St John the Baptist is one of the most significant parish churches in England, preserving an exceptional mixture of late Saxon, Norman, medieval and post-medieval features within a remarkably unaltered setting. The building’s importance lies not simply in the age of its fabric but in the survival of so many architectural elements that have disappeared elsewhere.

The church consists of an aisled nave with a south porch and western bellcote, together with an aisleless chancel partly flanked by a south chapel. Built primarily of rendered rubble beneath stone slate roofs, the structure has a modest and distinctly rural appearance. Small diagonal buttresses, parapets and projecting head spouts add texture to the exterior, while traces of a former sanctuary bellcote remain visible on the roof ridge.

Among the oldest features is the south doorway, believed to be either late Saxon or late eleventh century in date. Although reset, it survives with its roll moulding and distinctive strap imposts, providing rare evidence of early medieval craftsmanship. Elsewhere, the church retains masonry associated with its Saxon origins, making it one of the most architecturally important early churches in Wiltshire.

The present form of the building was largely established during the thirteenth century. The chancel and arcades display the architectural vocabulary of this period, including elegant pointed arches and finely carved capitals. Particularly notable are the tall arcades supported by columns with trumpet and stiff-leaf capitals, demonstrating the influence of Early English Gothic design.

The western bellcote is a particularly attractive feature. Dating from the mid to late thirteenth century, it contains paired trefoiled openings beneath a circular motif. Its design echoes the tracery forms used elsewhere in the church, particularly at the east end, and contributes greatly to the building’s distinctive silhouette.

Later medieval additions include the fifteenth-century north doorway and the large Perpendicular west window. The south aisle contains a square-headed two-light Perpendicular window, while a seventeenth-century insertion occupies the south-east position. These successive alterations illustrate how the church evolved gradually rather than through a single building campaign.

The south porch, probably dating from the sixteenth century, is unusually deep and retains a decorative foiled niche above the entrance. Externally modest, it nevertheless provides an important transition between churchyard and interior.

Inside, the church is celebrated for its remarkable collection of surviving medieval furnishings. Numerous fourteenth- and fifteenth-century parclose screens remain in place, creating a complex sequence of spaces rarely preserved elsewhere. Equally unusual are the high box pews, many of which retain evidence of post-medieval alterations. Together they provide an exceptional record of changing patterns of worship.

Among the church’s greatest treasures is a late Saxon carved relief of the Madonna and Child, now mounted within the south chapel. Originally positioned outside the church, the sculpture is one of the most important survivals of pre-Conquest religious art in Wiltshire.

The interior also preserves fragments of medieval wall paintings, particularly around the chancel arch, together with surviving stained glass and a wealth of liturgical features. These include a three-bay sedilia, piscina, aumbry, sanctuary recesses and traces of a medieval reredos. Collectively, they provide an unusually complete picture of medieval church design.

The roofs are of particular interest. The chancel retains a single-framed roof with tie beams, possibly dating from the thirteenth century, while the nave is covered by a later medieval queen-post roof with wind braces. These timber structures contribute significantly to the church’s historic character and architectural importance.

Later furnishings include a fine pulpit and tester dating from around 1630, seventeenth-century communion rails and table, a fifteenth-century font and numerous memorials. The churchyard further complements the building, containing carved seventeenth- and eighteenth-century headstones and a collection of historic chest tombs.

What makes St John the Baptist exceptional is the survival of all these elements together. Few English parish churches preserve such a complete architectural record of nearly a thousand years of continuous development, making Inglesham one of the most important and evocative medieval church interiors in the country.
