21st centurySt James continues as an active Anglican parish church in the heart of Shere.
1967Church formally listed at Grade I for its exceptional architectural and historic interest.
1956Chancel fittings redesigned and renewed by Louis Osman.
1911Brass of John Lord Audley restored.
1895Restoration carried out by architect S. Weatherley, including addition of the vestry.
1790sChurch remains central to village life during growth of Shere around The Square.
17th centuryStudded and panelled timber west door installed.
17th centuryClassical timber gallery constructed across the west end of the church.
16th centuryPerpendicular Gothic window inserted into the south aisle.
1491John Lord Audley commemorated by monumental brass depicting him in armour.
15th centuryLarge curvilinear north window added to the shortened transept area.
1412Robert Scarcliff, Rector of Shere, commemorated by monumental brass in the church.
Late 14th centuryMedieval timber roofs with crown posts and scissor trusses constructed.
14th centuryPresent chancel constructed and crossing arches rebuilt.
14th centuryLarge circular quatrefoil window inserted into the south chapel.
c.1350Decorated Gothic east window with ogee arch installed.
c.1300Church enlarged and lengthened as the village of Shere prospers.
13th centurySouth aisle and south chapel added in the Early English Gothic style.
c.1150Norman church established at Shere with central tower and north nave wall.
