St Bartholomew’s Church stands within a landscape shaped by human activity stretching back to prehistory. Archaeological evidence shows settlement in the area from the Palaeolithic through to the Roman period, including a nearby villa and earlier Neolithic occupation. This long continuity of habitation provides the wider context in which the church emerged.

Christianity arrived in this part of Berkshire in the early 7th century, following the mission of St Birinus in AD 633. It is likely that a church was first established on this site not long afterwards, possibly replacing an earlier pagan sacred location. The early building would have stood close to the River Thames, a position both significant and vulnerable, and may have suffered destruction during Viking incursions in the 9th century or later conflicts in the early 11th century.

The present structure dates largely from the late 13th century, when a more permanent stone church was constructed. This medieval phase established the essential form of the building, with nave and chancel forming its core. Later medieval developments enriched the church, including the addition of a 15th-century font and other features that reflect the liturgical and artistic life of the parish.

The church continued in active use through the upheavals of the Reformation and into the post-medieval period, accumulating layers of change. A notable transformation came in 1734 with the construction of the west tower in brick, a distinctly Georgian addition that contrasts with the earlier flint and stone fabric. Internally, the church reflects evolving patterns of worship and patronage, including memorials to local figures such as the Sykes family.

The most significant later alteration occurred in the Victorian period, when the church underwent substantial restoration in 1875–1876. During this work, the north aisle and porch were added, and the chancel roof was rebuilt, reshaping the building while preserving much of its medieval character.

By the 20th century, the focus of parish life had shifted away from Lower Basildon, and the church gradually fell out of regular use. Despite this, its historical and architectural importance was recognised through its designation as a Grade I listed building. Today, it is preserved by the Churches Conservation Trust and remains consecrated and accessible as a place of reflection.

Though no longer a functioning parish church, St Bartholomew’s continues to embody the spiritual and communal history of the area. Its fabric tells a story not only of architectural change, but of continuity—of worship, memory, and the enduring presence of faith across centuries.
