Architecturally, St Mary’s Church is a highly unusual building, combining medieval fabric with early seventeenth-century encasing and an ambitious early eighteenth-century remodelling by Thomas Archer. The result is neither a conventional medieval parish church nor a typical Georgian chapel, but a distinctive cruciform estate church with strong Baroque character.

The original church consisted of a nave and chancel built of rubble flint and stone. In the early seventeenth century this earlier fabric was encased in coursed ironstone. Archer’s later work transformed the building further: the ends were rebuilt in Portland stone, matching dressings were added, and transepts were introduced to create the present cruciform plan.

The exterior is defined by strong architectural order and carefully composed elevations. The chancel east end has an ashlar façade with a central arched window, large keystone and impost blocks carried across to corner pilasters. Beneath and above the window are blind openings, creating a layered architectural composition more typical of Baroque design than medieval church architecture.

Doric pilasters appear at the corners and junctions of the building, giving the church a formal classical rhythm. A plain entablature runs around the structure, while the nineteenth-century plastered gable above the chancel includes a two-light round-headed tracery window. The contrast between classical detail and ecclesiastical form is one of the church’s most distinctive features.

The transept fronts are particularly striking. Each has a central doorway framed by moulded pilasters and an arched surround with an oversized keystone. Volute-like console forms rise beside the arch, with a lunette window above. The north transept has double doors and a fanlight, while the south transept mirrors the composition with a blind opening.

Above the north transept is a square timber bellcote with a hipped lead roof and bell, added during nineteenth-century re-roofing. This later feature gives the church a more traditional rural silhouette while sitting above Archer’s highly controlled classical composition.

Internally, the church is notable for its monuments and restrained fittings. The chancel contains stained glass by Mayer of Munich. The south transept houses the important monument to Thomas Archer by Peter Scheemakers, showing Archer reclining on a sarcophagus, alongside the later memorial to H. Archer by J. Wilson.

Other notable interior features include the brass to Sir John Penruddock dated 1600, the monument to J. May designed by James Wyatt and carved by Richard Westmacott, stone benches around the walls, nineteenth-century boarded roofs and furnishings, and a medieval circular font on a square base with an early seventeenth-century carved band.

St Mary’s is architecturally significant because it preserves the layered transformation of a medieval parish church into an early eighteenth-century Baroque estate church. Its combination of old fabric, ironstone casing, Portland stone detailing, classical pilasters, sculptural monuments and later Victorian additions gives it a character unlike almost any other rural church in Hampshire.
