Architecturally, St Catherine’s Chapel is one of Surrey’s most atmospheric medieval religious buildings, combining the restrained simplicity of a small Gothic chapel with a dramatic hilltop setting overlooking the River Wey. Although now roofless, the surviving structure preserves much of its medieval character and remains an important example of a roadside or wayside chapel associated with travel, pilgrimage and local devotion during the Middle Ages.

The present chapel was constructed shortly before 1317 by Richard de Wauncey, Rector of St Nicholas, Guildford, on the site of an earlier chapel whose existence is documented as early as 1230. Built primarily of local sandstone with ashlar stone dressings, the building occupies a commanding position on St Catherine’s Hill above the ancient crossing point of the River Wey. Its elevated setting gives the chapel a striking silhouette visible across the surrounding landscape and reinforces its long association with travellers approaching Guildford.

The chapel is rectangular in plan and internally measures approximately 15.5 metres by 8 metres, divided into three bays. Although modest in scale compared to parish churches, the proportions are elegant and carefully balanced. The surviving walls are strengthened externally by buttresses, while decorative pinnacles once rose above the north and south walls, giving the building a more elaborate skyline than survives today. At the north-west corner stands a taller quoined turret which provides additional vertical emphasis and contributes to the distinctive profile of the ruin.

The windows were designed in the Decorated Gothic style, the dominant English architectural style of the early fourteenth century. Their flowing tracery and pointed arches would originally have filled the chapel interior with light. During restoration work in the late eighteenth century, two of the windows on the north and south elevations were converted into doorways approached by external steps, alterations associated with the chapel’s transformation into a picturesque “romantic ruin.” Despite these changes, much of the medieval masonry survives and continues to convey the building’s original architectural form.

Although roofless today, the surviving wall structure allows the original volume of the chapel to be clearly understood. The simple rectangular interior would once have been covered by a steeply pitched roof and furnished for worship, likely with an altar at the eastern end and seating or open standing space for travellers and local worshippers. The absence of aisles, transepts or tower reflects the chapel’s relatively small and specialised role compared with a full parish church.

One of the chapel’s most striking qualities is the relationship between architecture and landscape. Positioned high above the Wey valley and beside the ancient route traditionally associated with pilgrims travelling toward Canterbury, the chapel was deliberately sited to be both visible and spiritually symbolic within the countryside. The surrounding hillside and river crossing would have formed an important threshold point for medieval travellers, and the chapel’s elevated position gave it both practical visibility and devotional significance.

After the Reformation the chapel fell out of regular use and gradually decayed. By the eighteenth century it had become valued less as a functioning religious building and more as a romantic medieval ruin. In 1793 Robert Austen undertook partial restoration work intended not to fully rebuild the structure, but to preserve and enhance its picturesque qualities in keeping with contemporary tastes for Gothic ruins within the landscape. These interventions helped ensure the chapel’s survival into the modern era.

Today, St Catherine’s Chapel survives as a rare and evocative example of a medieval roadside chapel. Its surviving Decorated Gothic windows, sandstone walls, buttresses and hilltop setting continue to create a powerful sense of age and isolation. Despite the loss of its roof and fittings, the ruin retains a remarkable architectural integrity and remains one of Surrey’s most distinctive medieval monuments.
